Gainesville’s Artwalk is the last Friday of the month. From 7-10pm various galleries and studios are open to visitors and exhibits of individual artists can be found in restaurants, bars and shops around the downtown area.
In August of 2018 I put my art up at the Vine Bakery in Gainesville. It was called Myths & Monsters, an exhibit by Barb Howe.
It’s the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Shelley’s monster is lonely, searching for the Creator who abandoned him, longing to find his place in society. He’s an outsider, shunned. So is Grendel, the rim walker, pacing around the edge of the world.
Dragons are not monsters. They represent greed (hoarding) in some cultures, good luck in others. In some versions of Beowulf Grendel’s mother is a dragon.
What do monsters do when they’re not out monstering? And when they’re not monstering, are they still monsters?
