Barbara Howe is an instructor at the University of South Florida. She is also a writer and former political communications specialist who has worked on immigration and labor rights, healthcare policy, international affairs and federal budget issues.

Barb’s two areas of specialty are international relations and political theory. Her research interests include democratic backsliding, rising authoritarianism, and the role of political communication and information technologies in both of those. Ms Howe is also interested in the related phenomena of populism, polarization and political extremism.

During the fall semester 2024, Barb taught an advanced political theory course for poli-sci majors called Democracy and Propaganda.  The video below is an introduction to it. Previously, Ms Howe taught INR 2002: Introduction to International Relations.
